Dr. Lane Freeman is a nationally recognized educator, consultant, and thought-leader in online learning and artificial-intelligence integration. During more than 20 years across K–12 and higher education, he has turned classrooms and campuses into vibrant, technology-rich learning communities.
Lane began his career at Tarboro High School as a Computer Applications teacher and CTE Department Chair, where he earned National Board Certification and pioneered Moodle-based courses long before “blended learning” became mainstream. In 2013 he joined Nash Community College as Department Chair of Nash Online, scaling the division from one to 38 fully online programs and launching a rigorous professional-development model to ensure instructional quality system-wide.
Today Lane serves as State Director of Online Learning for the North Carolina Community College System, leading policy, faculty development, and strategy for 58 colleges. He authored the state’s HyFlex adoption guidelines, authored the AI Guidance Handbook for the NCCCS, and created the TrAIT Framework (Transparency in AI and Teaching)—published by the Online Learning Consortium and now used nationally to promote ethical, high-impact AI practices.
A sought-after keynote speaker, Lane has presented at OLC Accelerate, the AVID National Conference, Inside Higher Ed webinars, and technology summits from Florida to South Dakota. His workshops empower K–12 districts, community colleges, universities, and workforce partners to harness AI for personalized learning, assessment innovation, and workforce up-skilling.
Holding a Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Higher Education focus), Lane combines research-driven insight with practitioner know-how, making him a trusted partner for institutions aiming to elevate instructional effectiveness, equity, and engagement in the AI era.
